“She dreams more often than she sleeps.”

– Jonny Ox

🤍 from the hearth 🤍

Dear friend,

For as long as I can remember, I’ve never really been a fan of sleep. I know, it’s strange. Our bodies were designed to sleep; they crave its warm embrace. But I’ve always felt much happier as a conscious participant in the world, not an unconscious bystander.

When I was a child, bedtime brought with it a sense of melancholy, heralding the end of daytime adventures. Instead of bringing solace, surrendering to the night felt dystopian, as if I were bidding a forever farewell to the world’s wonders.

When I did doze off, my dreams were interrupted by night terrors, and my sleepwalking became an unwitting and all-too-frequent escapade, sometimes even leading me to dangerous places. Sleep became something to fear.

Fortunately, I outgrew the night terrors and sleepwalking, but the disdain for sleep lingered, resulting in many restless nights.

Over the past few months, however, I’ve been working on shifting my attitude toward sleep. Instead of viewing it as a time thief, I’m choosing to see it as an investment—a nurturing cacoon that strengthens my relationships, sharpens my mind, invigorates my body, and lightens my soul.

I’ve cultivated a nighttime routine that has helped tremendously in my journey toward better rest. Below, you’ll discover a collection of practices that bring me peace and ease me into sleep on restless nights. I hope they offer you some respite as well.

☃️ seasonal selections ☃️

  • I tell my body it’s time to settle in by listening to a beautiful album or playlist while I cook at night. Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd has been on repeat lately. I think it’s the most ethereal of Lana’s records (which, if you know her music at all, is saying a lot). My fav tracks: “A&W,” “Paris, Texas,” “Let the Light In,” and “Margaret.”

  • I’m a huge beverage gal—I always have a cute or comforting drink in hand. As a Dry January participant, I’ve been loving mocktails. This Sleepy Girl Mocktail is a game-changer and the perfect lil nightcap. Add a dash of valerian root for an extra bedtime boost.

  • In the spirit of unwinding before bed, I’ve been swapping screens for a good read lately. For those interested in the unconventional world of anti-fashion, I recently penned this piece for Backward Fashion. Dive into the oxymoronic style concept that’s been making waves since the ‘70s and prepare to wind down with a fresh perspective.

  • For a soothing transition into the dream realm, indulge in The Sleepy Bookshelf, a podcast that brings classic works of fiction to life. I’m currently obsessed with the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland episode—an auditory delight that turns falling asleep into a whimsical journey. As an Alice superfan, the blend of familiarity and whimsy makes for a lovely nighttime listen.

🌬 spectacular vernacular 🌬

dormiveglia [dor-mi-ve-glia] (n.) • Italian

  1. the space that stretches between sleeping and waking

  2. half-asleep or semi-conscious

Startled to find her husband standing starry-eyed in front of the lit stove, Rosemary chalked up the late-night incident to dormiveglia.
