“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.”

– Albert Camus

🤍 from the hearth 🤍

Dear friend,

For me, winter always brings with it whispers of warmth. The world outside may be frozen, but deep within me the icy layers begin to thaw. Just as the earth embraces her yearly hibernation, I am nestling into the recesses of my self.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want out of this life, where and who I want to be. I keep returning to the one person and place that matters most—myself. I am my own home, a realization that dawns on me often these days.

When I was younger, I felt trapped inside of myself. My emotions were invasions, regularly threatening to take over my being and set up camp indefinitely. They were lethal waves ready to submerge my soul at any given moment.

Years later, I’ve learned that my emotions are transient visitors, joining me briefly for yoga practice or stopping by for afternoon tea. I know that the waves aren’t so menacing after all—that they will crest and then fall, as all things must.

What once felt like an assault on my existence now feels like a dance I can gracefully navigate, embracing the ebb and flow of emotions as they twirl through the choreography of my inner world.

Phillip Roth said “Nothing bad can happen to a writer. Everything is material.” I’m beginning to embrace this philosophy, learning to live with the layers of who I am.

As winter blankets the world, I am grateful for the warmth I have kindled within—a far cry from the cold that once lingered in my core. That cold still creeps back in sometimes, but now I recognize it as a fleeting friend—one that won’t overstay its welcome.
