“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where one ends, and where the other begins?”

– Edgar Allan Poe, “The Premature Burial”

🤎 from the hearth 🤎

Dear friend,

Fall is here and I am thinking of death again. How can I resist her pull when the leaves are withering and the light fading away?

As a naturally introspective person, I spend a lot of time reflecting on life, death, transformation, and rebirth, considering all of the many ways we evolve throughout our lives.

And autumn—with its slow, spectacular unbecoming—is the perfect backdrop for these cobweb contemplations. In a season so often tied to beginnings—back to school, football games, sweater weather—I find comfort, too, in the endings.

Fall reminds us that death is so full of life. Endings are but small seeds that can blossom into something more vivid and vivacious than we ever thought possible.

This year, embrace the darkness of the season. Step out of the light and into the gloom.

🍂 seasonal selections 🍂

  • He’s My Man by Luvcat has been on repeat at my house since its release a couple of weeks ago. It has everything I want in an autumn song: wistful melodies, a hint of melancholy, and… hypnotic female insanity?

  • This track immediately brought to mind “A Rose for Emily,” an eerie Faulkner short story that delves into themes of isolation, obsession, and decay. The protagonist resorts to desperate measures to avoid loneliness, a response that kinda feels justifiable as the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp… (jk)

  • And speaking of gothic literature, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Premature Burial” is an autumn must-read. Its captivating, unsettling narrative examines the dread of being buried alive—a universal fear during his era.

  • The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is a gothic lit staple, weaving together psychological depth and supernatural intrigue. The Netflix adaptation had me in a chokehold when it first premiered, beautifully blending intricate family dynamics with an atmosphere of dread and suspense that lingers long after the credits roll. Perfectly splendid!

Dormiveglia [dorm-ee-VEH-lee-ah] (n.) • Italian

  1. the state of being half-asleep or semi-conscious; the twilight state between sleep and wakefulness where dreams and reality intertwine

When she truly reflected on it, death seemed not to be an ending but a state of dormiveglia, akin to falling asleep on the couch as a child, the soft echoes of her favorite TV show drifting in from the neighboring room.

🌰 cozy conversations 🌰

Do you view death as an ending or a transition? What feelings does it evoke in you, and how does this perspective shape your understanding of life?

Thanks for reading, and I do hope you have the snuggest of Thursdays. I’m currently hunkered down at my sister’s, awaiting Hurricane Helene. If you’re interested, here’s a good tracker to keep an eye on her. She really is a beauty, but if you’re anywhere on or near her path, please be safe! The worst of her fury should just miss us here in South Tampa.

Until next time, stay cozy.
