Dear friend,

Happy September! We are now in the official first month of autumn.

For me, September is the prelude to the grand autumnal show—a time for meticulous planning and setting the stage before October’s frightening festivities take over.

This is the time to make your autumn bucket lists, choose your Halloween costumes, and stock up on those coveted seasonal Trader Joe’s goodies before they vanish into the ether.

In today’s seasonal selections section, I’m sharing a few of my 2024 autumn bucket list items. Feel free to borrow these ideas or let them inspire your own autumnal adventures.

Here’s to brisk beginnings and a most eventful autumn.

🍂 seasonal selections 🍂

  • Go on a Cozy Picnic: As the weather cools down, plan an autumn picnic. Pack a basket filled with your favorite fall treats—crisp apples, trail mix, and maybe even this Pumpkin Spice Chardonnay, if you’re feeling frisky. (I haven’t tried it yet but have heard great things.) Don’t forget a thick blanket to spread on the ground and some extra layers to keep cozy. Choose a spot with a view of the changing leaves or a quiet corner in a local park. Bring along a good book and enjoy the crisp air and serene surroundings.

  • Plan a Road Trip: Consider a weekend road trip to a nearby cabin or treehouse—autumn is the perfect time for it. Even if the fall foliage isn’t spectacular in your area (looking at you, Florida), you can still embrace the season’s spirit by exploring local trails, visiting a nearby orchard, or simply soaking up the quiet beauty of nature. Don’t forget the essentials like a snug sweater, a disposable camera, and a playlist filled with your favorite autumn songs.

  • Explore Local Autumn Events: Make it a goal to attend a variety of fall gatherings this season. From pumpkin patches and apple orchards to craft fairs and hayrides, these events are a perfect way to get into the autumn spirit. Check local listings for happenings near you and plan your weekends around them. Arrive early to avoid crowds and bring a tote bag for any timeless treasures you might stumble upon.

  • Host a Practical Magic Movie Night: Recently, my sister and I set up a cozy “barage” in her garage with a bar, projector, record player, and other fun touches, creating the perfect spot for a Practical Magic movie night. You don’t need an elaborate setup to get into the spirit—just add a touch of magic to your space with autumn-themed sweets or drinks like midnight margaritas. Gather your friends or family and venture into the bewitching realm of sisterly sorcery. If witchcraft isn’t your thing, any other autumn film will make for an enchanting evening.

📙 spectacular vernacular 📙

Rusticate [rust-i-kayt] (v.) • Latin

  1. to spend time in the country or engage in rural activities

Autumn’s burnt-brittle breath beckoned like never before, inviting all to rusticate with the fallen leaves.
